Fatigue-related mishaps
A fatigue-related mishap is usually classified under the heading of human error. Objective evaluation of all available facts is required in determining whether fatigue was a significant contributing factor in a particular error. A fatigued person, as opposed to a fully rested person, is more apt to make certain types of errors. Typical fatigue-related errors include missing a curve on a quiet, otherwise straight road, overlooking a low fuel warning and starting to brake too late to avoid a collision. The consequences of fatigue-related errors range from minor to catastrophic. Identifying those human error mishaps that are fatigue-related is increasingly important in our 24/7 society where work shifts of 12 hours or more are common.
